Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean the furniture?

You can dust, brush, or vacuum away any accumulated surface dirt. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soapy water. Make sure you wring out excess water and wipe the wood gently. We recommend an organic or natural soap rather than a harsh detergent. This is because a harsh soap can damage or discolor the natural sheen of the bamboo. Since bamboo is a reed plant, it is important to make sure you do not oversaturate the bamboo while cleaning.

Can the Shelves be mounted along studs that aren’t 16” on center?

Our Shelves are compatible with 24″ studs and other irregular stud spacings. The 18”/34” Shelves can be installed by using drywall anchors for one of the two included Mounting Planks as long as the other Plank is fully installed into a stud.

The latest edition of our 34” Shelf has two slots that run along the Shelf allowing for more options when mounting into studs. You can install the Shelf onto the Mounting Plank at any point along the slots. This accommodates 24″ studs as well as other stud spacings that may be a little more irregular. You can also utilize this feature to work around a corner. Otherwise, there is no change in the functionality of the Shelf.

Can the furniture be mounted outside?

We do not recommend our products for outdoor use. Bamboo has a high starch and sugar content. Since our bamboo is composed of many layers of compressed reeds, the bamboo can mold over time in areas with high humidity or regular exposure to rain. We are currently in the process of testing sealant options that will protect the material. In the future, we hope to offer furniture that can withstand the elements for our customers who would like to expand their Catastrophic Layout to the outdoors. At this time, we ask that our furniture is used indoors only.

Can the Shelves be mounted in a mirrored fashion?

Yes, the modular design of the furniture allows you to easily flip the design of any of our Shelves or Condos. The furniture will arrive disassembled, giving you the freedom to work with your space. You can mirror any Condo layout or even split the pieces up and install them in your own arrangement.

Cat Shelf Quality

All of the cat furniture concepts receive rigorous testing from our cats at home. We usually test numerous variations over a period of 3-6 months prior to going into production.

  • Our cat shelves are made from solid, sustainable bamboo and are weight-tested to hold 85lbs (38kg) per shelf.
  • The tops of the cat shelves are given a rough texture to provide better traction for cats.
  • The modular design allows you to attach hammocks or an array of other items like feeders, planters, or sisal poles to the shelves.
  • Our patented hidden bracket design gives the appearance of a floating cat shelf.

  • In 2018, a study by Pet Obesity Prevention showed that 59.5% of the cats in the US were overweight.
  • Without enrichment, cats can develop behavioral issues like aggression, anxiety, attention-seeking, urinating or defecating outside of the litter box, eating disorders, or other disorders like over-grooming or scratching.

Cat playing with many different toys to see which is best

Best Cat Toys of 2023: Reviewed & Graded by Experts!

Staying active is an important part of your cat's physical and mental health. Oftentimes indoor cats live lives that are under stimulated with days full of sleeping and lounging around the house.
Toys are a great way to keep your cat active and add enrichment to their day. We've always had a wide array of cat toys around the house but when we adopted our cat Bronson and put him on a diet, we noticed that he was only getting up to use the litter box and to eat. He was a tough customer and wasn't interested in 90% of the toys we put in front of him.
Here's a list of the toys that our cats love. We've added links to as many as we were able to track down, but there were a couple of toys we weren't able to track down online.
STUFFED FISH - SCORE 7/10
This first review is skewed. It's not Bronson's favorite toy in the house, but it was one of the first cat toys he warmed up to. Only two of our four cats will play with the stuffed fish, so it's not necessarily a hit in the house.
The fish has gained extra points because if your cat will play with it, the toy is a good length for enticing your cat to use its back legs to try and kick it and this almost causes your cat to do crunches. Because of this, we rated it a 6/10 and then added another point because of the joy that it brings to watch Bronson tackle a giant fish.
The fish's stomach has a zipper and I believe it came with catnip to stuff inside. It was filled with cotton and you could sprinkle the catnip onto the cotton. I wish they would've left the cotton out and filled it entirely with catnip. This is one of the cat toys we had trouble tracking down to include a link. Now that the wiggling tail version came out, it's bombarded the fish cat toy search results on Amazon.

FUZZY WORM CAT TOY - SCORE 8/10
This is a cat toy that all of our cats really liked; it's a really fun toy. My only wish is that it didn't fall apart so quickly. Each toy only lasted a few play sessions, but I've bought them since and think they're worth it. Bronson originally rated this one 10/10, but since he doesn't pay for the replacements, we've changed his rating to 8/10.
When I originally posted this on social media, people kept pointing out that the middle photo looks like Bronson's playing with a miniature drill and now we can't stop seeing that. Here's a link to a collection of toys on Amazon.

CARROT CATNIP TOY - SCORE 9/10
Bronson's a big fan of any canvas cat toy filled with catnip, but this is one is getting a rating boost because it's fun to watch him play with the toy. The feathers are also a good touch. This is getting a rating of 9/10.
If you check out the listing on Amazon, there are a few of other shapes as well.

DISASSEMBLED FEATHER CAT TOY - SCORE 6/10
Bronson loves feathers, but we're only able to get him to play with it using our hands rather than attaching it to a wand. This actually came with the Fuzzy worm toy and I'm sure there are better options for feather toys. One complaint about this is that it's rather heavy, so when attached to the wand it kind of clunks around and the cats don't really like it. But off the wand is a lot of fun.

TRIXIE ACTIVITY BOARD - SCORE 9/10
We've tried a few of Trixie's different activity boards and haven't been big fans of the other models. But this 5 in 1 activity board is a lot of fun.

Bronson is typically limited to 15-20 dental treats a week and they can go pretty fast. Sometimes the treat disappears within seconds of dropping it, so that why we didn't give this cat food puzzle a perfect score. We highly suggest using freeze dried chicken with this, breaking up the sections into flakes, and sprinkling them around the board. It stretches the calories out a little better.
RAINBOW CAT CHARMER - SCORE 10/10
Bronson's given this marvelous ribbon a perfect score. There have been very few times that we've waved this masterpiece in front of his face and not had him break into play. It's incredibly enticing and lasts forever.

ARECA PALM - SCORE 10/10
This is one of my favorite plants and the only bad thing I can think of to say about Areca Palm is that it's actually too fun for cats. So that means that when you're not playing with them, they're probably going to try and shred it to pieces. We have one at work and pull stems off to bring home for this reason.

6 Cat Exercises & Activities That Your Cat Will Love

Exercise is important to keep your cat healthy. If your cat is on the heavy side, be sure to start in small doses. When we first brought Bronson home, he was 30lbs and would quickly tire out when playing with toys. However, when anything with food was involved, he'd push through. Make sure to give your cat a break if they start panting or sticking their tongue out.
It can be hard to get a cat to be more active. It seems like 90% of the time I wave toys in front of them, they don’t want to play. Luckily, Bronson is motivated by food and so almost all of these games end with him eating. We’ve found that freeze-dried chicken and dental treats work really well for this. It's not only good for your cat's body to get exercise, but also good because it keeps their mind active. If you're interested in learning more about Importance of Feline Enrichment, check out our blog.
1. FOOD WALKING
This was one of the very first exercises we did with Bronson after adopting him. Initially, he preferred to sleep and would only get up to eat and use the litter box. This is where "Food walking" was born.Early-stage - We started off with moving his cat grass about 6 feet at a time as he ate it.Intermediate - Eventually, we started doing the same for his wet food during meal times. Then we started increasing the distance so he would be doing a large circle around our living room.

Advanced "Food Walking"- If you have stairs in your home, you're in luck, because they are great for exercise. Bronson always preferred sleeping in the bed upstairs, so during meal times, we would take his food downstairs so that he would need to take the trip down to eat. Then after he was done he would also need to take the trip back up to his bed. After a few times of this, we started worrying about his joints and held off until he dropped under 30 pounds (13.6 kg).
2. PLAYING WITH TOYS
Cat toys are a great way to keep your cat moving around. We've tried a good number of toys and compiled a list of our favorite toys that were most beneficial in keeping Bronson active.

3. TOSSING DENTAL TREATS
Chasing after dental treats is one of Bronson's favorite activities. This is one that he will never stop doing so we're careful not to overdo it. If you have stairs, tossing dental treats up and down them for your cat to chase is even more exercise for them. The type of Dental treats we use is Purina and it's really only because of the round shape. We've heard good things about Greenies dental treats, but they don't toss across the floor as well.

4. STANDING FOR TREATS

This has been one of the most fun activities to see progress over time. When Bronson first tried to stand for treats it was one of the cutest things ever. At that time we celebrated seeing him get his front paws off the ground about an inch and today he's dominated the sport.

STANDING AT 30 LBS (13.6 KG)
STANDING AT 23 LBS (10.4 KG)
JUMPING AT 18 LBS (8.1 KG)

5. WALKING ON A HARNESS
Exploring outdoors may be another good source of exercise, but it's not for every cat. Our cat Heisenberg is incredibly skittish. He will come out on the porch as long as he can hang out right next to the door and it remains open in case he changes his mind. But other cats really enjoy the outdoors and giving them the opportunity to safely explore the wildlife offers a nice source of enrichment and also promotes them to get up for a walk.To initially get Bronson used to the harness we would put him in the harness and then toss treats around the house so that he would walk in the harness and then receive a treat. At the time, Bronson was too heavy for flea and tick medicine, so he had months of wearing the harness indoors before actually going outside.

6. PLAYING ON CAT FURNITURE
Cat furniture can be really beneficial in promoting exercise because using it entails your cat climbing and jumping up the wall. This is something we keep in mind when designing our cat wall condos. Since cats like to be up high, we design them with having a high perch to end on. Typically that endpoint is some type of lounging area, but can also be something like a feeder or planter lounge. So for cats to get up to their favorite area, they first need to climb up things like shelves, sisal poles, and hammocks. The Juggernaut Cat Condo shown below is a good representation of this.I remember how excited we were the first time Bronson climbed up on our cat furniture, because for the two years prior he'd been watching the other cats climb up sisal poles and jump along cat shelves from below or his hammock that was mounted close to the floor. So when the day came where he was healthy enough to maneuver up the walls himself, it was a huge celebration.
